THE SAD REALITY WITH WHICH WE, AS A PEOPLE, MUST DEAL

Every war, every revolution, demands the sacrifice of a generation, of a collectivity, by those who undertake it.

Simone de Beauvoir

The Ethics of Ambiguity

We are now at war on many fronts:

  • Childhood trauma
  • Economic obsolescence
  • Income inequality
  • Educational imbalance
  • Social isolation
  • Poor health habits
  • Pain
  • Illness
  • Inadequate access to health care
  • Death

Some of us will emerge victors; others will not. Among the losers, some will pay the ultimate price, will become part of a disturbing statistic known as "exess deaths", will from causes largely outside their control die "deaths of despair".

This is surely the most personal, and the most painful, disgrace of our age.
